Thailand Trip: Rooftop Dining at Zense

If you googling about what to do in Bangkok, rooftop dining will be one of the recommendations. There are many rooftop dinner places in Bangkok. The most popular rooftop dining in Bangkok is Sky Bar - Lebua at State Tower and Vertigo and Moon Bar at Banyan Tree Hotel. Those two require minimum spending with expensive price if we want to make reservation. Because me and my traveling partner had limited budget so we decided to choose the more affordable rooftop dining place, which was Zense. We were so happy when finding out that Zense located in Central World mall, which can be reached by foot from our hostel.

When arrived in Central World, it was quite difficult to find the lift to the 17th floor where Zense's located. We called the restaurant and then the receptionist told us to take lift in a Zen shopping mall. I guess we came too early at that time, so the restaurant still empty, but that was great because we can pick the best spot that we want.

I ordered Salmon Crispy and my traveling partner ordered black pepper beef as the main course. The foods were tasty, especially the dessert, Mango Sticky Rice. The view were amazing too, especially we could see the sunset while we were eating our dinner.

Thailand Trip: Jim Thompson House and Bangkok Madame Tussaud

Since I stayed in the heart of Bangkok, so I can reached many great places just by foot. One of them is Jim Thompson house. Jim Thompson is located in a small alley across National Stadium.

I guess Jim Thompson house is often visited by foreigners, because they're so ready with english brochure and english tour guide. The ticket price already include the tour guide fee, so you don't need to worry of paying additional cost.

Jim Thompson is a silk trader from USA who fell in love with Thai. He is well known as the one who revitalized the silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s. He disappeared in 1959 and then Thai government took over his house and managed it as a tourism placed named Jim Thompson House to honor his services in Thai silk industry. I recommend you to visit this place if you want to understand the concept of traditional Thai house and (of course) the journey of Jim Thompson.

The tour guide forbid us to take a photo of the furniture inside the house. So I only took the photo from outside the house.

After finished with Jim Thompson house, me and my traveling partner continued our journey to Siam Discovery mall, and went to the sixth floor where Bangkok Madam Tussaud was located. We already bought the ticket online, so we just show our online ticket.

The wax statue inside Madam Tussaud was look so similar with the real one, but of course you still can differentiate which one is real person and which one is statue because nothing can beat the realness of human skin.

To help enjoying the place and made the visitors had memorable photo, Madam Tussaud provide some supporting equipment. The supporting equipment were available in Queen Elizabeth II's, Obama's family, Beethoven's, Steven Gerrard's, Madonna's, and Jackie Chan's statues. I really enjoyed taking pictures with all the wax statues >.<

Thailand Trip: Chao Praya Dinner Cruise

Chao Praya river has big function in Bangkok, it's not only used to paint the town, but also as a medium of transportation. People in Bangkok really takes the benefit of Chao Praya. It can be used as a short cut road, because some area are in busy traffic if you reached it by car. Besides for transportation, many company use it to help the tourist enjoying the city by cruising the river, such as a Chao Praya dinner cruise.

There are many company that offer the dinner cruise, you can easily search it on google. After searching and googling, I chose White Orchid River Cruise. My traveling partner made online reservation prior we went to Bangkok. When in Bangkok, we didn't need to worry about how to get to the cruise because the cruise provide pick up service from our hostel to the cruise.

When we entered the cruise, we were welcomed by a jazz player and also a Thai traditional dance. The series of foods already stand by on the table, but we're only allowed to start the dinner when the cruise started sailing.

After eating, my traveling partner asked me to get some fresh air and enjoy the view in outside the cruise. From there I can see Grand Palace temple and Wat Arun temple at night. They looked so majestic with yellow spotlights.

Actually the food was so so, but what I like most was the great view and also the amazing performance that were provided by the cruise. There were dancer that act and sing (lip sync actually) like Marilyn Monroe, Jenifer Lopez, and another sexy creature. The audience were so amused by their stage performances.

When the sexy dancer finished her dance, the lights in the room started become darker and more looked like a clubbing place. The audiences started dancing on the dance floor. A group of people who sat near the singer looked really enjoyed the show and started dancing along with the song, until I heard one of them speak in Bahasa. Meeen... why I met Indonesian people again in here -___-

I just enjoyed the show from my seat

After the performances, I took time to get to the roof of the cruise and found out the view from there was a whole lot better that standing just outside to room like I did previously, because the you could see all the amazing view from higher places.

Finally, the cruise back to the harbor and all the passengers went out from the cruise. After that we just went to the place that was mentioned by the driver, and then he picked us up and drove us back to the hostel.

Thailand Trip: Wat Arun and Wat Pho

Last year I made a short trip to Thailand, at that time the political condition of the country still went well so nothing to worry about. Because the trip only about three days, so it was too short to visit other city like Phuket or Pattaya, so I decided to explore Bangkok only.

Seeing Bangkok was like seeing Jakarta, but the traffic and transportation was better in Bangkok. I stayed in a backpacker hostel named Lub D, which was the cheapest hostel in the most strategic place in the heart of Bangkok. It is located across the National Stadium, and really close to some famous malls in Bangkok, like Siam Discovery, Siam Center and Siam Paragon.

My first expedition in Bangkok was temples hopping. From Wat Arun to Wat Pho. I didn't visit Grand Palace temple because when I read some reviews, the temples not much different from the two temples, and the entrance price was more expensive.

In order to get to the Wat Arun, I took MRT from National Stadium station to Wongwian Yai station, from there, I looked for taxi, and it only cost me 100 bath to the entrance of Wat Arun temple. The taxi using meter so I didn't worry at all.

The entrance fee for Wat Arun was 50 bath. The temple was so tall and colorful. Once I entered the temple, I heard a tourist shouted to his kids "ayo foto di sini!", wow, I suddenly felt like I was in Borobudur or Prambanan temple, because even though I was in Thailand, but I still met Indonesian people. Okay -__-.

such a colorful temple

Near the main temple, there are some statue like golden statue (I don't think this one is Buddha) and cat statue too.

After finished exploring the ground level, me and my traveling partner continue climbing the stairs to of the main temple. I couldn't stop holding the hand rail because the stair was so long and steep. But after reaching the top of the temple, I could see the view of Chao Phraya river and saw how its mingle with its surrounding.

climbing down the temple

Done with the temple, I climb down the temple. When I walked around the temple, I saw some people took photo in the Thailand traditional costume. When I looked closer, there was a clothing rental near there, who offered the visitors to take a photo with the traditional costumes. I guess they often get Indonesian tourists as the buyer, because when he knew me and my traveling partner came from Indonesia, he suddenly speak Indonesia, though it was not fluent, like "pilih yang mana bajunya.." which means "which clothes do you want..". After a quick changed, then me and my traveling partner took our turn to photo in Thailand traditional costumes ^.^

After finished with photo session, we continued exploring Wat Arun by take a looked at King Monument and a three-tiered roofing gate.

the three-tiered roofing gate

Then we took a boat to cross the river to Wat Pho temple. The boat was so cheap, only took us 3 bath/person. Wat Pho was located exactly across the river from Wat Arun. So the fastest way to get there was only by boat.

When I got closer to Wat Pho, I was confused which way should I chose to the entrance gate. Then suddenly I heard a Tour Guide in Indonesian said, "semuanya, lewat sini!" or "everybody, this way!" then I just followed the group and voila! I found the entrance gate. Yes, Indonesian tourist are everywhere.

The entrance price to Wat Pho was 100 bath. The nice thing was, by paying 100 bath, I could exchange a free coupon with a bottle of mineral water. The temperature was hot, so free drinking water was such a nice gift away. To get into the room with the giant sleeping Buddha, I had to take off my shoes and put it in a bag, and brought the bag wherever I go. When I leaving the building, I could take out my shoes from the bag and return the bag to a basket to be used by other visitors.

the sleeping Buddha

yes, it was this huge

The Sleeping Buddha was literally huge, and golden. It was really hard to take a picture of it because the room was not so big and the visitors was crowded, so you should queue just to take a photo of the Buddha's head. In the room, there were many signs mentioned "beware of pickpocket", which made me curious if there was many pickpocket activities happened there.

beware of pickpocket gangs

In Wat Pho, the interesting part was not only the sleeping Buddha, but also some temples around it. I could not stop myself from taking picture because the place was beautiful.

the temples are so colorful

I don't know the meaning of the statue's hand gestures

why this statue was colored differently?

I love its luxury ornaments

When I entered to the praying room, it was felt so sacred, because the place was so beautiful and many prayer looked so focus with their pray.

Done with Wat Pho, I returend to National Stadium by taking a boat from a port near Wat Pho, and stopped near Saphan Taksin station, and then continued our journey by MRT from Saphan Taksin station to National Stadium station.
